Aalto University and VTT presented Bioeconomy 2.0 at Helsinki Design Week 2024 as part of the Makers of the Impossible exhibitions at Designs for a Cooler Planet. The showcase explored innovative bio-based materials in textiles, health technology, and high-performance applications, demonstrating how woody biomass and lignocellulose can drive sustainable industrial advancements.

Featured projects included SolarSafe, a self-sterilizing nanocellulose material for medical use; Blackwood, a superblack wood for optics and space applications; BIOPTICS, a wood-based optical fiber for real-time health monitoring; LA-FAST, a nanocellulose sensor for detecting drug molecules; and the Shimmering Wood Dress, a biodegradable, wood-based glitter for fashion and design. The exhibition was held at the Marsio building in Otaniemi, Finland.  More info: here
